Blue Water RV Resort, Freeport, TX

Blue Water RV Resort, Freeport, TX

The Blue Water Resort is on a barrier island (also known as Follets Island) between Freeport Texas and Galveston Texas. This area is very close to where explorer Cabeza de Vaca was believed to have come ashore in Texas in November 1528. Not unlike other coastal areas we have visited, the area has been the victim of several hurricanes including three this year that caused some destruction and erosion of the beach. Beaches in this part of Texas are known to be less inviting than other areas of the gulf including Florida, Alabama and even south Texas but they were less inviting this year because of the storms. Unlike other coastal areas we saw some unexpected things here including cactus growing in and near the beach areas, cattle grazing in fields on the barrier island, and rattlesnakes. Although we didn’t personally see any of the rattlers, two were spotted in the park while we were there. We were glad we didn’t run into any.

While staying at the Brazos Bend State Park hurricane Delta formed near Cuba. For the second time in two years (we had a close encounter with hurricane Dorian in Florida last year) we were facing a close call with a hurricane. The forecast looked like we should be ok as long as Delta followed the forecast but much movement west could have put us in a bad place with no where to go. Since Brazos Bend is already in the middle of a swamp and there were large (sometimes unhealthy) trees over our rig, we decided it would be best to move a bit further west.

Wow, Brazos Bend State Park is just gorgeous. The park is very remote and so lush with massive oak, pecan and many other trees with Spanish moss hanging in them. Upon entering for our 2 week stay, we were surrounded with swamps, five lakes, many hiking trails leading all over the park and lots of wildlife including alligators! Yes, we saw over 30 alligators while hiking around the lakes. Thank goodness our campsite was well away from the lakes so we did not have to check for alligators constantly.

Cranes Mill Park (COE), Canyon Lake, TX

We spent 2 weeks at Cranes Mill Park on Canyon Lake as our first stop after Johnson Creek where we had stayed put for six months while waiting for COVID-19 to improve. Cranes Mill and Canyon Lake had been highly recommended by our new friends Darrell and Kay who we met at Johnson Creek as well as several others. There aren’t a lot of trees in the park but we couldn’t have picked a better time to be there. Eleven out of the fourteen days we spent there were were fairly cool for Texas in mid-September. In the evenings with a north breeze it actually got a bit cold and we were able to enjoy three campfires.

Yes, we are alive and well! The dreaded virus that has invaded our country has kept us sheltered-in-place for 6 months. Thank you to many friends and family who have reached out to check on us when we had not posted to this blog in quite a while.

We arrived at Johnson Creek RV Resort in mid-March for a planned one month stay before returning to the Austin area for our semi-annual doctor visits. We had been looking forward to getting there because of the beauty of the Texas Hill Country in the spring, opportunities for lots of activities and events, wineries, outdoor areas and a lot of good restaurants but soon realized everything was closing. Just before we arrived we had seen the first of empty store shelves due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we were starting to see some craziness around RV Parks and closures. We quickly assessed the situation and felt that we would be safer sheltering-in-place as a longer term resident. We found the area to be wonderful for a long stay. It had a good hospital along with a nearby Walmart so we updated our reservation extending our stay. We ultimately spent six months here, the longest we have stayed anywhere since we started this adventure.
