Mountain View RV Park, Van Horn, TX

Mountain View RV Park, Van Horn, TX

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Site Quality: Gravel pads and roads. Our site was long enough for our rig and truck.
Type: Commercial
Access: Easy access from Interstate 10 about 2 hours east of El Paso.
Staff: The manager we checked in with was very friendly and helpful.
Amenities: There were Restrooms with showers and laundry facilities but we didn’t use them. Ice and filtered water machine on site.
Cellular/WiFi: Verizon and AT&T were very good. The park had WiFi but we did not use it.
Restaurants: At the recommendation of the park hosts we went to RJ’s Grill in town. Having been hailed as the best place in town to eat we were a bit disappointed. The food was acceptable but nothing special. There is a restaurant at the El Capitan Hotel that looked pretty good but it was pricey for a 1-star hotel. The hotel is historic within the town and looked better than 1-star to us but we decided not to spend the extra money to eat there.
What we liked: Ease of access along I-10. Full hookups during the winter. Nice views of the nearby mountains. Large park with some permanent residents and quite a few empty sites so it was easy to get in. We were given a range of sites and told we could pick whichever one we liked best.
What we didn’t like: The park is gravel and it rained most of the time we were there. Water puddled during the rain but it did not become muddy. The owner said they hadn’t had rain until then in months and it does tend to become dusty without rain. There is a train track nearby but noise was minimal and they didn’t seem to blow their horn going through town. There isn’t much to do in town – maybe a museum or two. This was a good place distance wise for us to stop overnight and we were able to get the trailer’s yearly inspection done at Virdell Tire and Tow in town. Typical for small towns, the guy dropped the job he was doing and quickly checked the trailer and had us on the way.
Verdict: We weren’t sure what to expect before we arrived. The park looked decent on their web site but we’ve seen many of those that just aren’t what the pictures portrayed. Mountain View was an exception. The park was clean and well laid out. Although gravel, it did not turn to mud in the rain. We were pleasantly surprised and would stay here again when passing through.

Sanger / Denton North KOA, Sanger, TX

Sanger / Denton North KOA, Sanger, TX

Rating: ⭐⭐
Site Quality: Asphalt and gravel roads and pads. Long enough for our rig and truck. Sites are fairly close together with a picnic table for each. The first couple of rows of sites (1 to 42) have concrete pads and roads. The remaining sites are gravel with gravel roads that weren’t in great shape when we were there. These sites seem to be occupied by long term residents.
Type:  Commercial Park
Access: Just North of Denton in Sanger, TX right on Interstate 35.
Staff: Staff interaction was good but minimal.
Amenities:  Fishing pond, Swimming pool, clubhouse, pavillion, playground, laundry.
Cellular/WiFi:  Verizon and AT&T were both acceptable but a bit slow. They may have had WiFi but we did not use it and they did not advertise it.
What we liked: Easy access, nice clean park in most cases. Good access to stores and restaurants nearby (mostly in Sanger and Denton which is about 12 miles away). Very little road noise as the park is pretty far off I-35 and there is an RV dealership in between the road and the park. McClains RV store is expanding and will likely be a huge superstore soon.
What we didn’t like: Some train horn noise from tracks about 1/4 mile away but it wasn’t bad. Quite a few long term residents in the gravel area of the park and the roads there were also gravel and not well maintained.
Verdict: This is an acceptable park for a night or two stay when passing through but nothing really special. There are several state parks nearby that would likely be nicer although a bit less convenient.

Lake Livingston / Onalaska KOA, Onalaska TX

Lake Livingston / Onalaska KOA, Onalaska TX

We stayed at the Lake Livingston / Onalaska KOA in late October of 2019 as we were heading back to the Round Rock Area from our tour of the Southeast. The first part of the stay we met up with good friends, Tammie and Peter, for three days with their new RV. The first two of those days, the weather didn’t cooperate. We woke up on the third to a gorgeous day. The sky was clear and it was warm enough to be comfortable but cool enough at night to have a campfire while sitting outside and watching the World Series game 5, Houston Astros beat the Washington Nationals. It was a great four days with them relaxing, catching up, and making new memories. Peter is a great cook and made dinner twice! So glad we can look forward to camping with them in the future.

Shady Creek RV Park and Storage, Aubrey, TX

Shady Creek RV Park and Storage, Aubrey, TX

We stayed here for 4 days in May 2019 so we could visit family and friends in the area. It had been more than 26 years since we had lived nearby and needless to say the growth in the area had made it virtually unrecognizable from when we were in The Colony in our first house.

12/2021 Update: We stayed here again in January 2021 I think about site 210. The park is nice for a short stay and many people stay long term and those sites are nice. The biggest issue is that growth from Dallas is reaching this far north and traffic in the area is really bad. In particular, traffic backs up from a stop sign on Fishtrap road beyond the park. This makes it difficult to get out of the park and it can take 5-10 minutes to get past the stop sign.

Inks Lake State Park, Burnet, TX

Inks Lake State Park, Burnet, TX

We stayed at Inks Lake State Park for 5 days in April 2019 on our way back towards the Round Rock area for our bi-annual visit. This was a great time of year for our visit as the wildflowers were beautiful and an evening campfire was great for the cool evenings. Inks Lake has always been a favorite park in this area although we never came here much when we lived close by. During the peak season this park stays very busy and closes entry to additional people during the day when the park reaches capacity.
