Although it was hot in Utah during 2021, this park is one of the nicest we have stayed at and would be great for an extended stay in the summer months assuming that temperatures were more normal for the area. The town itself caters to tourists but has not gotten quite as busy and as pricy as other nearby cities like Park City. In many ways it’s still a small to medium size city with a lot of small town charm. During the summer they have a weekly food and craft market in their Main Street Park along with some good music. While we were there Tony Holiday a respected blues musician from Memphis performed free to the public. There are also plenty of restaurants and stores in the area including a Super Walmart.

Rock Springs / Green River

We stopped in the Rock Springs / Green River area for 5 nights after leaving Laramie, WY. Rock Springs in particular has a lot of restaurants and stores including some of the big name stores so it’s a good stop for things like that. Despite the fact that Escapees was having their 2021 Escapade going on in the large Sweetwater Events Complex which has over 1200 full hookup RV spaces that area wasn’t crowded. Although we are Escapees members, we booked the site here before we knew that the Escapade would be going on and we got there a day or two late. One of these days we’ll make some of the big RV get togethers like Escapade but so far we just aren’t big fans of large crowds. With so many full hookup sites, Rock Springs would have been a good place to try one out.

We stopped in Laramie for four days as we headed further west and north this summer. We didn’t have a lot of expectations before arriving as the area is mostly in the plains and it is a bit dusty and desolate. As we would soon see however, there is a lot of frontier history here as well as some gorgeous scenery not far from town.

Site Quality: Dirt/gravel pads and roads. Our site was long enough for our rig and truck.
Type: Commercial
Access: Easy access from Interstate 25 just south of the New Mexico / Colorado boarder.
Staff: The manager we checked in with was friendly and helpful although we had to wait for her to return from an errand. Once before we came here to get propane and the office was also closed during the day when it was supposed to be open.
Amenities: There were Restrooms with showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station but we didn’t use them. I believe they may have all been closed in winter when we were there. Propane on site.
Cellular/WiFi: Verizon and AT&T were decent. The park had WiFi but we did not use it.
What we liked: Ease of access along I-25. Full hookups during the winter. Nice views of the mountains west of Raton. Propane is available on site.
What we didn’t like: The park is mostly dirt and could be very muddy – luckily although there was still some snow on the ground the mud for the streets was not bad. There was some mud near the entrance to our rig. There is an alley that separates the front of the park from the back.
Verdict: The Raton KOA is good for a short stopover on the way to or from Colorado along I-25.

We stayed at Oasis RV Resort in Amarillo, Texas for a week in December as we made our trek west.  There was a mall and some larger stores there so we could do some shopping for Christmas.  This was a very nice park with lots of space, amenities and it was well maintained.  There were no trees so staying here in the summer would be very hot but for this cold and windy time it was a good find.

The first day there we had to go to The Big Texan Steak Ranch!  We had been there before when passing thru.  It has a great variety of steaks and that was what we were hungry for.  It advertises that if you can eat a 72 oz steak and all the sides in 1 hour then it is free.  There is an elevated table set up with timers in the front of the restaurant for anyone who want to take the challenge. We did not even try!  The whole ranch is a fun place to visit.   There is a line of limousines with longhorns mounted on the front to shuttle people to and from the ranch.  Inside is an over-the-top western decorated restaurant, a gift shop, western arcade and large desert counter.
